Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar has raised concerns over Gautam Gambhir’s stance on rewarding players for their performance in the Champions Trophy 2025, questioning whether such an approach sets the right example for aspiring cricketers. Gavaskar’s remarks come in response to Gambhir’s suggestion that monetary incentives should be offered to motivate the Indian team for the prestigious ICC tournament.

Gavaskar’s Criticism: A Question of Ethics?

Speaking in a recent discussion, Gavaskar expressed his disapproval of linking financial rewards to national duty, emphasizing that representing India at an international level should be motivation enough for players.

"Shouldn't playing for the country be the biggest reward? If players need extra financial incentives to perform, are they setting the right example for the next generation?" Gavaskar questioned.

He further added that while prize money and bonuses are common in cricket, demanding them beforehand sends the wrong message, especially when players already receive significant contracts and endorsements.

Gambhir’s Perspective: Rewarding Excellence

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, known for his aggressive and straightforward views, had earlier suggested that players should receive substantial financial rewards if they win the Champions Trophy 2025, arguing that such incentives recognize the effort and pressure international cricketers face.

"Playing for India is an honor, but rewards further encourage excellence. When players give their all, they deserve recognition beyond just a trophy," Gambhir had stated.

Debate Over Motivation in Modern Cricket

The debate between national pride and financial incentives is not new in cricket. While veterans like Gavaskar believe that patriotism and passion should drive players, others argue that monetary rewards are a way to acknowledge the evolving nature of professional cricket, where high stakes and competition demand more than just personal motivation.

Gavaskar’s comments, however, have sparked discussions among fans and experts about whether players should expect financial incentives for ICC tournaments or if the honor of winning for the country should be the sole driving factor.

What’s Next?

With the Champions Trophy 2025 set to be a major event, all eyes will be on the Indian team’s preparation and performance expectations. Whether or not financial rewards become a talking point within the BCCI remains to be seen, but the debate over motivation and role models in Indian cricket is likely to continue.
