Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has given a harsh assessment of Shubman Gill’s captaincy for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing IPL 2025 season, stating that the young batter is not yet ready to lead a team at this level. Sehwag’s remarks come after Gujarat Titans’ recent underwhelming performances, raising concerns about Gill’s leadership abilities.

Sehwag Questions Gill’s Captaincy Readiness

In a post-match discussion, Sehwag did not hold back his criticism, pointing out that Gill’s tactical decisions and leadership skills still require significant improvement.

"Shubman Gill is an exceptional batsman, no doubt about that. But as a captain, he is not ready yet. You can see it in his decision-making, field placements, and bowling changes. He still has a long way to go before he can be considered a top captain," Sehwag stated.

Gujarat Titans' Struggles Under Gill

Gujarat Titans appointed Shubman Gill as captain following Hardik Pandya’s departure to Mumbai Indians. While Gill has proven himself as a consistent top-order batsman, leading a side in a competitive league like the IPL brings an entirely different challenge.

GT’s recent losses have raised questions about Gill’s tactical awareness and ability to handle pressure situations. Critics, including Sehwag, have pointed out instances where the team failed to capitalize on strong positions, suggesting inexperience in leadership as a key factor.

Sehwag’s Advice for Gill

Despite his sharp critique, Sehwag also offered constructive advice, urging Gill to learn from experienced captains and focus on improving his game awareness and strategic thinking.

"Captaincy is not just about being a great batsman. It’s about making the right decisions under pressure. Gill should take time to study other captains, observe their decision-making, and improve his game sense," Sehwag suggested.

What’s Next for Gujarat Titans and Gill?

While Gujarat Titans still have time to turn their season around, Gill will need to adapt quickly to the challenges of captaincy. With experienced players in the squad, he could benefit from seeking advice from senior teammates to refine his leadership style.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on whether Shubman Gill can silence his critics and prove himself as a capable captain or if Gujarat Titans will struggle under his leadership.
