What is Kendo?
Kendo, meaning "the way of the sword", evolved from samurai sword-fighting techniques. Practitioners, known as kendoka, use bamboo swords (shinai) and wear traditional protective gear, including the men (helmet), do (chest guard), kote (gloves), and tare (waist guard).
Our Experience at a Kendo Class
🗡️ Warm-up & Footwork: The session began with suburi (sword swings) and precise footwork drills to improve agility and balance.
⚔️ Basic Strikes: We learned controlled strikes targeting key areas—head (men), wrists (kote), and torso (do)—all executed with a powerful shout or "kiai" to display spirit.
🥋 Sparring (Keiko): Advanced students engaged in controlled duels, testing strategy, speed, and endurance.
🧘 Mindfulness & Etiquette: Respect and zanshin (mental awareness even after striking) are integral to Kendo, reinforcing focus and discipline.
