A political controversy has erupted in Goa after the state government lifted its long-standing ban on Pramod Muthalik, the chief of Sri Ram Sene, a right-wing organization. Criticizing the decision, Goa MLA Viresh Borkar questioned whether the government was trying to damage the state’s thriving tourism industry.

MLA Viresh Borkar Condemns Decision

Borkar, who represents the Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP), expressed his discontent over the government's move, warning that allowing Muthalik to operate freely in Goa could harm the state’s reputation as a global tourist destination.

"Why has the government decided to lift the ban on Pramod Muthalik? Is the state trying to finish tourism? Goa has always been known for its inclusive and liberal culture, and such actions can send a wrong message to tourists and locals alike," Borkar stated.

Why Was Pramod Muthalik Banned in Goa?

Muthalik and his organization, Sri Ram Sene, have been at the center of several controversies, most notably for their moral policing activities. The group gained national attention for its involvement in the 2009 Mangaluru pub attack, where members assaulted young men and women at a nightclub, citing opposition to "Western culture."

Given Goa’s liberal and tourist-friendly environment, successive governments had barred Muthalik from entering the state for over a decade, fearing that his ideology could disrupt social harmony and affect tourism.

Concerns Over Tourism and Public Sentiment

Borkar and other critics argue that lifting the ban could lead to tensions and social unrest, discouraging tourists who visit Goa for its vibrant nightlife, beaches, and cultural diversity.

"Goa thrives on tourism, and any attempt to impose rigid ideologies here will only hurt businesses, locals, and the state economy. The government must rethink this decision," Borkar warned.

State Government’s Justification

The Goa government, however, has not provided a detailed explanation for lifting the ban. Officials have stated that they are monitoring the situation and will take action if necessary.

Meanwhile, Muthalik has welcomed the decision, claiming that his organization will work towards "preserving Hindu culture" in Goa.

Conclusion

The lifting of the ban on Pramod Muthalik has sparked political and social debates in Goa, with concerns about its impact on tourism and communal harmony. As the controversy unfolds, all eyes are on how the state government will balance law, order, and Goa’s open, tourism-driven identity.
